What happened to the fireworks?

July 6, 2011

On Sunday after staying out late the night before with old friends who were in town, I was tired and uninspired.

“I don’t know what I’m going to write about this week,” I said to Papa.

“Don’t worry,” he said, “we’re all getting together for the fourth. Something’s bound to come up.”

The fourth of July started off at 6 a.m., not that I wanted it to start then. It was a Moose mandate. When Moose is up, everybody is up. He went into the kitchen and got himself an apple out of the fruit bowl, woke up his brother and then got in my bed with his half eaten apple.

So I washed sheets on the fourth of July because mine had Moose juice on them. I did not take a nap on the fourth of July because Moose did not take a nap.

Mimi arrived late afternoon with a birthday cake for the U.S.A., and then she ordered Papa to start the grill, but Papa didn’t light the charcoal to Mimi’s satisfaction. His pyramid was off and the coals didn’t seem to be heating properly. (Mimi is very particular about how things are done.)

“Who in the hell do you think was lighting the grill for all of those years we were married?!” he asked.

Mimi just looked at him.

“Is it possible to re-divorce?” Papa asked.

“You would have to re-marry,” I told him.

“That’s too much trouble.”

That was it. No raised voices, no hasty exits or slammed doors, no broken crockery—no dysfunction. Papa jinxed the day when he said there would be something to write about. Everyone was civil and happy, and it was a good day. The hamburgers were excellent and the birthday cake was divine.

Bean 1 and Bean 2 riding in the wagon.

Mimi pulled the little Beans around in the wagon.

Larry, the lizard who lives on my lemon tree, came out for the cookout.

A zinnia in my flower garden.

The flowers bloomed.

The U.S.A. birthday cake.

The cake was divine.

And the little boy eating the cake, well, he could hardly finish it.

It’s still really nice to read about excitement-free days. And I am in love with Larry. Anoles are awesome!

And all was well with the world.

My son posted on facebook that “My mom served couscous on the 4th of July”

I don’t know what his problem was, I made french fries for him. Never satisfied.

I am a total fan of uneventfulness…. it is so few and far inbetween that sometimes it is needed. badly.

I used to nanny for a little girl who would fall asleep in your high chair like that all the time. Hilarious!

Sometimes the uneventful days when ‘nothing’ happens are the best. The tot is too cute drifting to lalaland, once, only one time, my little one did the same, the other times he was getting cranky way before. And of course I grabbed my camera too, just had to. 😉

Sounds like a good 4th. The cake looks delicious and so professional! Mine would never look that good. And the lizard IS pretty cute!
